Campaign group, Protect Dundonald Rec have written to the leader of Merton Council, Stephen Almabritis to complain over issues being shown in a planning application to expand Dundonald Primary school onto the recreation ground.
The group are arguing that key documents such as objections from Sport England, the Wimbledon Society and Merton Design Review Panel, have been kept hidden from public scrutiny.
PDR believe the lack of transparency calls into question the impartiality of the Council and the independent role of the Planning Department, despite assurances by the Leader of the Council that planning officers have to be independent and impartial in considering this application.
protestors against the plans are also claiming that Merton Council have yet to release the minutes of a meeting between the Planning Department and Merton Council following a Freedom of Information Request three months ago.
Lorraine Maries, chairman of PDR said: "It is clearly wrong that public officials are deciding which information to divulge to the public and which to keep under wraps. For the right and proper decisions to be made, all information should be available for public scrutiny. Councillors and their civil servants have a duty to follow planning processes in a transparent and honest manner".
