New plans for Wimbledon Stadium?

A new proposal submitted to Merton Council by the Greyhound Racing Authority (GRA) details plans for the possible future development of Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium. 

This is the first time the GRA, which owns the site, has published a proposal which considers a football stadium on the site. The organisation is proposing space for a 10-15,000 seater football stadium with leisure facilities as well as 450 to 500 homes and a "substantial" retail store. 

The GRA will develop the scheme further over the coming months in consultation with a number of partners including Merton and Wandsworth Councils, AFC Wimbledon, the Environment Agency local residents and other groups. 

The proposal also includes community benefits such as coaching courses to promote sport to young people across south London.

Merton Council cabinet member for environmental sustainability and regeneration Councillor Andrew Judge said: "This suggestion by the owners of the Greyhound Stadium site that space could be provided for a football stadium is very positive as it would open up the possibility of AFC Wimbledon returning home to Merton. We are clear that, as is stated in our planning policy, this site should see an intensification of sporting activity. We will work with the site owners and all other interested parties over the coming months to explore this further."
