The RSPCA has launched a search for someone who shot a pigeon on Church Road in Mitcham.
A member of the public took the injured bird to the Blue Cross Animal hospital on Monday.
The RSPCA are now appealing for information, and urging anyone who knows who might have carried out this cruel and callous attack to come forward.
RSPCA Inspector Natasha Wallis said: "It was amazingly still alive when presented to the vet, but due to its injury they put it to sleep straight away."
"There is no doubt bird would have suffered immensely," said RSPCA Inspector Natasha Wallis.
"We believe the 'needle' type spear is actually a blowpipe dart which would account for this injury to a perfectly healthy bird, that would have been extremely difficult to catch,"
It's believed a blowgun was used.
Anyone found carrying out this kind of attack can be prosecuted under the Animal Welfare Act and could face up to six months in prison and/ or a fine of up to £20,000.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact the RSPCA in strictest confidence on 0300 123 8018.
