Thieves are targeting customers in coffee shops, warn Wimbledon police.

Handbags, money and gadgets such as mobile phones and iPads have been stolen from cafes in the town.

Wimbledon Town Centre Team Police Sergeant Tony Oram says "We haverecently found that thefts in coffee shops are on the increase, and are working hard with shop staff to deter criminals looking for an easy target.

"We urge customers to keep their valuables out of sight or with them at all times. Do not tuck handbags under a chair, where you can't see it, and definitely do not leave your mobile or iPad unattended on a table if queuing up for a coffee."

Shoppers can protect themselves from opportunist thieves by keeping valuables in view or with you at all times, never leaving property unattended, even for a moment and not tucking handbags or laptop bags under chairs.

Police are also asking people to keep their eyes peeled for people hanging round tables, or watching someone else's property, and to either tell staff or say something.
