The winter months are behind us and it’s time to venture outside once more. If you fancy a day out for the family you don’t have to travel for miles. Here are a few local attractions you might want to consider.

Wimbledon Windmill

Step back in time to the 1800s with a trip to the Wimbledon Windmill museum on the common. The mill was built in 1816 and has been restored to full working order, providing a unique window into the past. Learn about the construction of the mill and its history and see it in action for yourself.

The windmill will be reopening on 26 March following its winter break and is open from 2-5pm on Saturdays and 11am-5pm on Sundays. Entry is just £2 for adults and £1 for kids.

It’s entirely run by volunteers and they’re always on the lookout for people to help out. If you’d be interested, find out about volunteering here.

Wimbledon Museum

"A small intimate museum in which we show you, in pictures, words and objects, the three thousand year history of Wimbledon."

This little local gem is home to nearly 10,000 objects, artifacts, drawing, paintings and photographs charting the history of the local area from ancient times right up to the present. You can take virtual tour of the museum but it’s no substitute for the real thing. A fascinating afternoon out for all the family.

Deen City Farm

Deen City Farm provides the perfect opportunity to get up close with livestock and the rural life without having to drive out into the countryside. Tucked away in SW19 not far from South Wimbledon station, there are animals to meet, gardens to enjoy, tours, workshops and a riding school. A real taste of the countryside on your doorstep.

Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum

The All England Club’s museum is a fitting tribute the tradition of the World’s greatest tennis tournament and all the legendary players who’ve graced the famous competition down the years. Anyone with a even the remotest interest in tennis or sport in general should see it, including a unique tour of the dressing room by the ‘ghost’ of John McEnroe.

New Wimbledon Theatre

If you’re looking for a bit of evening entertainment, New Wimbledon theatre has a variety of shows to suit all tastes over the next few weeks. There’s Hairspray, Swan Lake on Ice, the Frankie Valli tribute Let’s Hang On, Irish dance spectacular Essence of Ireland and more. Take a look at the official New Wimbledon Theatre website for a complete show listing.
