Further to a story we reported last month, Merton Council has approved plans to redevelop the site of the King of Denmark pub at 83 Ridgeway in Wimbledon village despite heavy resistance from local residents.

Concerns are that the complex, to be comprised of a restaurant, a bar with  a beer garden and nine flats, will add to parking problems as well as increase traffic in the area. Residents are also worried about noise and the fact that people drinking and smoking outside will be as close as two meters away from the windows of cottages next door.

Andrew Pinchin, the man behind the project has said:

“It is designed to be an attractive amenity for Wimbledon.”

While St John’s Area Residents Association member John Hirsch offers an alternative view, citing the above concerns and pointing out that:

“I haven’t met a single resident who is in favour.”

Unfortunately for the protestors the prohibitive legal costs involved mean it’s unlikely that they’ll be able to take the fight any further.

Does this affect you and if so, how do you feel about it?
